Legislation affecting libraries in the 2007 session of the RI General Assembly (OLIS).

The Rhode Island General Assembly has created a Special Legislative Commission to Study the Current Strengths and Weaknesses of Library Services in the state.

The 19 member  commission will include elected officials, members of the public, and representatives of all types of libraries that serve Rhode Islanders.

The commission will:

Provide an assessment of current strengths and weaknesses of the various types of library services in the state.

Evaluate the results of state legislation passed in the 1980's that created the Library Board of Rhode Island, established a statewide library network, and made major changes in funding.

Explore cooperative mechanisms to provide the broadest access to the widest range of library Resources for all citizens through a better understanding of the roles that various types of libraries play.

It is anticipated that the commission will begin working during 2006.

History

Attempts to establish a Special Legislative Commission to Study the Current Strengths and Weaknesses of Library Services in the State of Rhode Island were unsuccessful in 2005. The legislation has been re-introduced in both the House and Senate, 2006-H7166 and 2006-S2382. The legislation has since past and the commission has since been established.
